Welcome to Minneapolis
Green and Growing, City of the Lakes, Minneapolis in 2008!
If you have never been to Minneapolis, you’ll be glad you came. With 22 lakes, the mighty Mississippi and a park within 6 blocks of wherever one lives make for an incredible urban green space – sometimes referred to as a City within a Park. Trails and bike paths abound and the selected home site for the convention is just two short blocks from the beautiful Loring Park with flower gardens on a pond, and just a stone’s throw across the bridge to the Sculpture Garden.
The city is a leader in its commitment to sustainability and finding solutions to address global warming and other environmental factors impacting our city. With that comes many non-traditional entrepreneurs and businesses alike. For over 30 years Minneapolis has been known for its dozen food co-ops scattered throughout the city and fine vegetarian and ethnic dining options. Many people use our local Farmer’s Market and have a commitment to community supported agriculture and eating good, healthy foods.
The diversity in our city has changed dramatically in the past 25 years. Large immigrant communities have settled here bringing religious, racial, nation of origin and ethnic diversity to the city. Many of them are familiar with the Green Party in their native homelands.
Minneapolis has a large GLBT community and hosts one of the largest Gay Pride parades and festivals in the country the last weekend of June. It was the second city in the U.S. to have a sexual orientation nondiscrimination law and first to have a transgender rights law (both in early 70's).
The Green Party of Minnesota is growing. It has a bright future as third parties have flourished in the state's long political history. The 5th District Green Party and the Green Party of Minnesota are wholly committed to providing the Green Party of the United States with the necessary volunteers, talent with expertise to put on a smooth, seamless and successful convention.
Minneapolis is a union town and our venue options presented are unionized workplaces. We have put together some of the best facilities with downtown conveniences that are close, walkable and enjoyable. Housing options include the downtown Millennium, Ramada Inn, and many more places close by. There will be some private homes and camping available in the area.
This website has been designed to provide you with lots of information about the convention, Minneapolis and the Green Party. It will be updated as more information becomes available.
